Preparation Strategy
Mathematics
RRB NTPC Mathematics is at Class 10 level — the same topics as SSC but slightly less complex. The key is speed and accuracy. Focus on: percentages, profit and loss, ratio, time and work, and mensuration — these cover 60–70% of questions. Practice mental calculation daily. Solve at least 20 maths problems daily for 3 months to build the required speed.
Reasoning
Series, analogies, and coding-decoding are the most frequently tested topics. Practice 30–40 reasoning questions daily. Unlike Maths which requires calculation, Reasoning rewards pattern recognition — improvement comes faster with consistent daily practice than with intensive cramming.
General Awareness
This section carries 40 marks in CBT 1 and 50 marks in CBT 2 — the highest of any section. It is also the most differentiating. Candidates who score 35+ in GA consistently outperform others in the final merit list.
For Railway-specific GK: Know Indian Railways history, zones (18 zones, headquarters), major projects (Dedicated Freight Corridors, Vande Bharat trains, bullet train project), and railway terminology. These questions appear in every NTPC exam.
For current affairs: Read one reliable monthly current affairs digest consistently for at least 4–5 months before the exam. Focus on events from the last 6 months before your exam date.
Previous Year Papers
RRB NTPC previous year papers are essential. The GA section in particular repeats questions from previous years with minor variations. Solve at least 5–7 years of previous papers. Topics that appeared before are high-probability for the next exam.
