Preparation Strategy
Prelims Strategy (60-day plan)
Reasoning (35 marks): Puzzles and seating arrangements typically account for 15–20 questions in IBPS PO Prelims. Master these first — they are time-consuming but highly scoring once you understand the logic. Practice 5–7 puzzles daily. Inequalities, syllogisms, and coding-decoding cover the remaining questions — these are faster to solve once practiced.
Quantitative Aptitude (35 marks): Data Interpretation (DI) typically has 10–15 questions. Start every practice session with a DI set. For arithmetic topics — percentages, profit and loss, interest — practice until you can solve standard problems in under 90 seconds. Number series and simplification are quick marks — master these early.
English (30 marks): Reading comprehension accounts for 10+ questions. Practice reading passages quickly and identifying the main idea before answering. For grammar questions, focus on subject-verb agreement, tenses, and prepositions — these cover the majority of error spotting questions.
Time management in Prelims: With sectional time limits (20 minutes each), sequencing matters. Most toppers recommend: English first (20 min) → Reasoning (20 min) → Quant (20 min). Find your own optimal sequence through mock tests.
Mains Strategy
Banking Awareness is the differentiator. Most candidates who clear Prelims but fail Mains do so because of weak Banking Awareness. This section requires 3–4 months of dedicated preparation — reading banking news, understanding RBI policy, and memorising key financial terms. Start this from day one of your preparation, not after Prelims.
Data Interpretation at Mains level is significantly harder. Practice caselet DI and missing data DI specifically — these are the question types that cause most time wastage in Mains.
The Descriptive Paper (letter + essay) is often ignored until the last minute. Practice writing 1 letter and 1 essay every week from 2 months before Mains. The topics are usually related to banking, economy, or current affairs.
Interview Preparation
Know your home state’s economy, industries, and recent developments. Know why you want to join banking. Be ready to discuss your graduation subject, any work experience, and current affairs from the past 3 months. Dress formally, speak clearly, and be honest — banking interview panels value straightforwardness over impressive-sounding answers.
