The Railway Protection Force (RPF) is a Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Railways, responsible for protecting railway property, passengers, and passenger area. RPF recruitment through the Railway Recruitment Board is one of the most popular uniformed service opportunities in India — combining the stability of a railway job with the benefits of a paramilitary service.
RPF recruits for two posts — Constable (Group E) and Sub-Inspector (Group C) — through separate examinations with different eligibility criteria.

Preparation Strategy
CBT Strategy
General Awareness (50 marks — highest): This is the largest section in RPF. Railway-specific awareness questions — RPF history, functions, passenger safety rules, railway zones and headquarters — appear regularly and are unique to RPF. Cover these specifically alongside standard GK.
Reasoning (35 marks): RPF reasoning is moderate difficulty — analogies, series, and coding-decoding together account for about 60% of reasoning questions. Practice these specifically. Non-verbal reasoning (mirror images, pattern completion) appears more in RPF than in most other Railway exams.
Arithmetic (35 marks): Class 10 level. Percentages, profit/loss, ratio, and time/work are the highest-frequency topics. Practice mental calculation for simplification and approximation questions — these save significant time.
Physical Preparation
Same principle as SSC CPO — start physical training from Day 1, not after CBT results.
Priority for male candidates: The 1600-metre run (5 minutes 45 seconds for Constable) is the most demanding physical test. Build running stamina systematically over months.
Priority for female candidates: The 800-metre run (3 minutes 40 seconds for Constable) and long jump require consistent practice. Join a local athletics track if possible.
RPF vs Other Railway Exams
RPF is the only Railway exam with a uniformed service component. If you want a desk-based railway job, NTPC is better suited. If you want an active, field-based career with paramilitary benefits, RPF is the right choice. The physical requirements reflect the operational nature of the role.
Career After RPF
Constable → Head Constable → ASI → SI: Internal promotion pathway through departmental examinations and seniority.
Direct SI recruitment: The SI post through direct RPF recruitment has better starting salary and faster progression than the Constable-to-SI promotion route.
Benefits specific to RPF: Railway accommodation in railway colonies, free rail travel (limited passes), medical facilities at railway hospitals, and the unique exposure of working within India’s largest employer.
RRB RPF 2026 — Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Constable be promoted to Sub-Inspector without re-appearing for the SI exam?
Yes, through the internal promotion route — Constable to Head Constable to ASI to SI — based on seniority and departmental exams. This is separate from and slower than direct SI recruitment through RRB.
Is the CBT syllabus different for Constable and SI?
No. Both posts share the same CBT structure — General Awareness, Arithmetic, and General Intelligence & Reasoning, each carrying identical marks. The difference is the minimum qualification (Class 10 for Constable, Graduation for SI) and the difficulty level of questions asked.
What height relaxation is available for hill-area or Scheduled Tribe candidates?
RPF provides height relaxation for candidates from hilly areas, Scheduled Tribes, and certain northeastern states, though the exact relaxation varies by notification — always confirm against the specific year’s official notification.
Do RPF Constables get railway travel benefits like other railway employees?
Yes, RPF personnel get limited free rail travel passes and access to railway medical facilities, similar to other Group C/D railway staff, in addition to standard central government employee benefits.
Is RPF a better choice than NTPC if I want a railway job?
It depends on what kind of work you want. RPF is a uniformed, field-based security role with physical fitness requirements. NTPC is largely desk-based or commercial/operational without any physical test. Choose based on whether you want an active or administrative career.
