RRB NTPC 2026: Complete Syllabus, Exam Pattern & Preparation Guide

The Railway Recruitment Board Non-Technical Popular Categories (RRB NTPC) examination is one of the largest government recruitment processes in India. With tens of thousands of vacancies across posts like Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Time Keeper, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Station Master, Goods Guard, and Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk — NTPC covers a wide range of railway department roles.

NTPC Has 10+ Posts — Which One Should You Actually Target?

Unlike Group D or ALP where you apply for one type of role, NTPC lets you select multiple posts on a single application — but they are not equally easy to get, and they lead to very different careers. Before you start preparing, decide which post actually fits you.

If you want a desk job with predictable hours: Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist are entry-level, lower competition (Level 2), and based in railway offices doing administrative work.

If you want public-facing work and faster promotion: Commercial cum Ticket Clerk deals directly with passengers and ticketing, and has a clearer promotion ladder into supervisory commercial roles.

If you want the highest pay and don’t mind running operations: Station Master (Level 6) is the most competitive NTPC post but also the highest paying, and carries real operational authority over a station.

If you want a field role over a desk role: Goods Guard and Traffic Assistant involve more movement and field coordination than the clerk-type posts.

Your preparation content is identical regardless of which post you choose — the CBT 1 and CBT 2 syllabus is the same for all NTPC posts. What changes is the cut-off (Station Master and Goods Guard typically have higher cut-offs than Clerk posts), so target accordingly based on your expected score.

This guide covers the complete RRB NTPC 2026 syllabus, exam pattern, eligibility, and preparation strategy.

Preparation Strategy

Mathematics

RRB NTPC Mathematics is at Class 10 level — the same topics as SSC but slightly less complex. The key is speed and accuracy. Focus on: percentages, profit and loss, ratio, time and work, and mensuration — these cover 60–70% of questions. Practice mental calculation daily. Solve at least 20 maths problems daily for 3 months to build the required speed.

Reasoning

Series, analogies, and coding-decoding are the most frequently tested topics. Practice 30–40 reasoning questions daily. Unlike Maths which requires calculation, Reasoning rewards pattern recognition — improvement comes faster with consistent daily practice than with intensive cramming.

General Awareness

This section carries 40 marks in CBT 1 and 50 marks in CBT 2 — the highest of any section. It is also the most differentiating. Candidates who score 35+ in GA consistently outperform others in the final merit list.

For Railway-specific GK: Know Indian Railways history, zones (18 zones, headquarters), major projects (Dedicated Freight Corridors, Vande Bharat trains, bullet train project), and railway terminology. These questions appear in every NTPC exam.

For current affairs: Read one reliable monthly current affairs digest consistently for at least 4–5 months before the exam. Focus on events from the last 6 months before your exam date.

Previous Year Papers

RRB NTPC previous year papers are essential. The GA section in particular repeats questions from previous years with minor variations. Solve at least 5–7 years of previous papers. Topics that appeared before are high-probability for the next exam.

RRB NTPC 2026 — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for multiple NTPC posts in one application?

Yes. NTPC allows you to give preferences for multiple eligible posts in a single application, ranked by your preference order. Your CBT 1 and CBT 2 scores are then matched against the cut-offs for each post you’re eligible for.

Is there a difference in syllabus between Graduate and Undergraduate level NTPC posts?

No. The CBT 1 and CBT 2 syllabus — Mathematics, Reasoning, and General Awareness — is the same for both Graduate and Undergraduate level posts. The difference is only in the minimum educational qualification and the posts you become eligible for.

How many attempts are allowed in NTPC?

There is no fixed limit on the number of attempts for NTPC specifically, but candidates must meet the age limit (with applicable category relaxations) at the time of each notification.

Does NTPC have a Physical Efficiency Test like Group D?

No. NTPC has no PET. Selection is purely through CBT 1, CBT 2, and a Typing Skill Test/CBAT only for specific posts (Clerk-type posts need typing; Station Master needs CBAT). This is a key difference from Group D and RPF.

Which NTPC post has the least competition?

Historically, Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist posts (Level 2) see comparatively lower cut-offs than Station Master or Senior Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, simply because more vacancies are usually available at the entry pay level.
