The Railway Recruitment Board Assistant Loco Pilot (RRB ALP) examination is one of the most technically demanding railway recruitment processes. Unlike NTPC or Group D which test general knowledge and basic aptitude, ALP requires specific technical knowledge related to the trade you have studied — whether that is Electrician, Fitter, Machinist, Welder, Electronics Mechanic, or any other relevant ITI trade.
An Assistant Loco Pilot works in the locomotive cab assisting the Loco Pilot (train driver) — a role that requires technical competence, alertness, and the ability to handle emergency situations. The selection process reflects this — it is more demanding than other RRB exams.

Stage 2 — CBT 2 (Second Computer Based Test)
CBT 2 has two parts conducted together:
Part A (General Subjects):
| Subject | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 100 | 100 | |
| General Intelligence & Reasoning | 75 | 75 | |
| Basic Science & Engineering | 75 | 75 | |
| General Awareness & Current Affairs | 50 | 50 | |
| Part A Total | 100 questions | 100 marks | 90 minutes |
Part B (Trade Syllabus — Qualifying):
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Questions | 75 |
| Marks | 75 |
| Time | 60 minutes |
| Nature | Qualifying only (minimum 35% required) |
| Content | Questions from your specific ITI trade syllabus |
- Part A marks count for merit
- Part B is qualifying — 35% minimum required to proceed, marks not counted in merit
- Negative marking: 1/3 per wrong answer in both parts
Stage 3 — Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
A unique stage specific to ALP — tests the psychological and cognitive aptitude required for the role of a locomotive pilot.
Tests included:
- Memory (short-term memory, spatial memory)
- Following directions
- Concentration
- Perceptual speed
- Information ordering
Key points about CBAT:
- Minimum qualifying score required in each test battery
- No negative marking in CBAT
- Candidates who fail CBAT can still be considered for Technician Grade III posts (if they qualify CBT 2 Part B)
- Practice cognitive aptitude tests before this stage — they are different from standard exam preparation
Stage 4 — Document Verification + Medical Examination
ALP has strict medical standards — this is expected for a role that involves operating locomotives. Vision standards, hearing, and general physical fitness are examined according to railway medical classification for operational staff.

Preparation Strategy
CBT 1 — Build Your Foundation
CBT 1 is similar to RRB NTPC and Group D in pattern but at a higher level — 75 questions in 60 minutes. Mathematics and General Science together carry 40 marks. Spend the most time here.
For General Science in ALP: NCERTs for Class 9 and 10 are the starting point, but also cover basic engineering science concepts — electricity, simple machines, and measurement units — which feature more in ALP than in other Railway exams.
CBT 2 Part A — Engineering Science Focus
Basic Science & Engineering (75 marks) is the section most unique to ALP and where most candidates underperform. Study engineering drawing basics, applied physics (Ohm’s law, levers, simple machines), and unit conversions specifically. These are not tested in any other RRB exam — ALP preparation resources specifically cover this.
CBT 2 Part B — Your Trade Advantage
This is where your ITI background becomes a strength. Revisit your ITI trade theory books systematically. The questions are from the same syllabus you studied — the advantage is yours compared to candidates who are less familiar with the trade content.
Minimum qualifying marks for Part B is 35% — a low bar. Aim higher (60%+) to ensure you are comfortable.
CBAT — Cognitive Aptitude Preparation
The CBAT is unlike anything else in the exam preparation world. Practice:
- Memory exercises — remembering sequences, spatial patterns
- Concentration drills — sustained attention tasks
- Following multi-step directions
- Speed and accuracy tasks
Several free online cognitive aptitude practice platforms offer tests similar to CBAT. Spend 30 minutes daily on cognitive practice for at least 4 weeks before the CBAT.
RRB ALP 2026 — Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I fail the CBAT but clear CBT 2?
You can still be considered for Technician Grade III posts instead of Assistant Loco Pilot, provided you’ve qualified CBT 2 Part B (the trade syllabus). ALP specifically requires clearing CBAT; Technician Grade III does not.
Is Part B (Trade Syllabus) really not counted in the final merit?
Correct — Part B in CBT 2 is qualifying only, with a 35% minimum requirement. Your final merit and rank are based entirely on Part A marks (100 marks) from CBT 2.
Can a Diploma holder skip the ITI trade requirement for ALP?
Yes. A 3-year Diploma in Engineering in a relevant stream is accepted as an alternative to ITI + relevant trade for ALP eligibility.
How is CBAT different from a normal reasoning test?
CBAT tests psychological and cognitive traits — memory, concentration, perceptual speed, and ability to follow directions — rather than knowledge-based reasoning like analogies or coding-decoding. It has no negative marking and requires a different kind of practice (cognitive aptitude drills, not subject revision).
Is the eligible trade list the same every recruitment cycle?
Not necessarily. The list of ITI trades eligible for ALP can be revised between cycles, so always check the specific year’s official notification rather than relying on a previous cycle’s list.
